Event Description

This course is a rollicking introduction to ancient Chinese philosophy and cosmology. Participants will learn to read the Chinese classics as the ancient Chinese themselves did, as thoughtful answers to the eternal questions: what does it mean to be good? What kind of society should we live in? Is there human nature, and if so, what is it? What is the Way? After studying the ancient Chinese view of the cosmos, participants will read a series of texts by China's most influential thinkers. Lectures will place these works into their contexts and illustrate difficult concepts. Discussion based on student questions will guide our interpretations of the texts. We will ask how these classics might be applicable in our own world.
