10 Favorite Albums of 2014.

Dec 23, 2014

Every year in music starts off unknown. While some trends seem inevitable, the majority of developments come as complete surprises. Favorite artists re-invent themselves, some disappointingly. And new creative forces take hold and capture our imaginations. I would never have dreamed that this year I would be loving a reggae album (Hollie Cook) or a country album from Nashville (Sturgill Simpson). But, I am so, so grateful that today’s music excites me. And I am already unbelievably excited about what 2015 might bring.

Ambient music is a broad and often misleading category of music, but throughout all ambient music there is a sense of spacious and expansive musical landscapes.   Julianna Barwick’s music is soaring, captivating and sparse, evocative of snowy, windblown places.

Iceland Rocks

Aug 11, 2013

Maybe it is something to do with the landscape, but with a population only a little bigger than Spokane (about 320, 000), Iceland produces more than its fair share of talented musicians.   The well-known names include Björk, Jónsi and his band Sigur Rós, as well as youngsters Of Monsters and Men.

When Two Jazz Greats Collide.

Pat Metheny plays John Zorn.     And why not?     While Zorn is best known for his sometimes difficult, avant-garde jazz, Metheny is no stranger to blistering experimentation.   On Tap: The Book of Angels, Vol. 20, Metheny returns to a style he worked in 1994 with Ornette Coleman (‘Song X’), solo in 1994 ('Zero Tolerance for Silence') and then with Derek Bailey in 1996 ('Sign of 4').

It’s been nine years since the last release from The Pixies, and twenty six years since their first release, Come On Pilgrim.  Now in the same time they announce the departure of bassist Kim Deal, arrives a kicking new song, Bagboy.   It’s the same bratty, scratchy and rocking sound as ever:

During the holiday season of 2011/12 it was almost impossible to avoid the three chord singalong, Lonely Boy, the first track on The Black Keys’ seventh album, El Camino.  For bandmates, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney it marked distinct commercial success, as the song reached 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album being certified a platinum record.

It has been a fast-paced year since Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released “Same Love”, the first track off their debut album.   Previously little known hip-hop performers from Seattle, they have now sold more than 2 million copies.

Returning to western Montana, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis play the Adams Center at the University of Montana on Thursday, Oct. 24.  Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, June 28, and are available at all GrizTix locations, by calling 1-888-MONTANA or online at griztix.com.

Winner of the of the Americana Music Association's "Artist of the Year" award in 2007, Patty Griffin is touring in support of her seventh album, American Kid.  A collection of songs focused on her late father, this album marks a powerful return to her own writing.   At turns romantic and at others uplifting, Patty gives voice to the joys and challenges of middle age.

Boisterous ska-jazz-funk band, The Cat Empire, have released their infectious, cheeky and fun sixth album.   The first single, Brighter Than Gold, is a great way to get a party started:

Laura, Laura and Laura

May 31, 2013

Three gorgeous women, three gorgeous voices.    And they’re all named Laura!

Laura Mvula is a young, British soul-singer with a big, lush, smoky voice.   There's a touch of baroque in her songs, a touch of torch singer.  She travels from big diva ballads to mysterious, intimate introspections.

It is hard to avoid asking whether she is the "new Adele", but she brings more to my mind Nina Simone.  Her debut CD, Sing to the Moon, is out now on RCA Victor.    The single, Green Garden, is a fair introduction:
