Brides, Bigamy, And Barataria: UM Opera Theater Rafts Onstage With "The Gondoliers"

Michael Marsolek talks with Anne Basinski, Director of The University of Montana's Opera Theater, about the collaborative production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Gondoliers." Produced at the MCT Center For the Performing Arts and featuring the UM Symphony Orchestra, the cast of this production of "pure melodious goofiness" (and some contemporary satire) includes Roxann Jackson as the Dutchess, Royce Mcintosh as Giuseppe, and Taylor Caprara as Casilda.

The plot: Two young Gondoliers have been raised as brothers. Right after they marry their sweethearts, they learn that one of them is actually the long-lost heir to the mystical kingdom of Barataria. Only an old nursemaid knows which brother is which – so, until she is found, the brothers must hurry to Barataria and reign jointly. There is also a complication in their marriages; it seems the infant king was married as a baby. In true Gilbert and Sullivan style, lots of silliness and wonderful song ensues before they untangle every knot.

"The Gondoliers" plays Valentines Day weekend, Feb 12-14, at MCT Center for the Performing Arts, 200 North Adams Street in downtown Missoula. Tickets are available at 728-PLAY (7529), the MCT box office, or online. Showtimes:
