Corey Stapleton has entered the Montana Secretary of State race.

A former state Senator from Billings has announced he’s running for statewide office.

Republican Corey Stapleton served eight years in the Montana Senate, and since leaving office he’s run unsuccessfully for Governor, the U.S. House, and the U.S. Senate. Now he wants to be Secretary of State.

"Probably till the day I die I will always just be someone who believes in serving my state, my country. I started when I was 17 years old and that probably will never change."

Democratic Secretary of State Linda McCulloch is nearing the end of her second term and can’t run again. Stapleton says his goal is better communication with the voters, starting with explaining why 52,000 of them were purged from voter registration rolls in the last year.

"The people need to know that and they shouldn't have to dig into their government or try to Google it to find this out. It’s significant enough that we have that responsibility to communicate that."

McCollough fired back at Stapleton’s charge, saying she doesn’t "purge" anybody. It’s county officials who cancel voter registrations, and then only when someone has failed to vote in two federal elections, dies, or gets a felony conviction.

The likely Democrat in the race, state auditor Monica Lindeen, had no comment on Stapleton’s announcement.
