On tonight's evening newscast: U.S. Department of Justice officials today said the Missoula Police Department has made all of the changes required after federal investigators found gender bias in how the city responds to reports of sexual assault.

The University of Montana will see a budget shortfall of $5.7 million for the upcoming year, according to figures provided at the most recent campus budget committee meeting.

Beginning June first, it will cost more to visit Yellowstone National Park.

The National Park Service announced Monday that the entrance fee will increase to $30 per vehicle. The current fee is $25. The pass is good for seven days.

A new judge is presiding over court cases in Missoula and Mineral counties after Judge Ed McLean retired April 30.

The number of elk in the Bitterroot Valley continues to grow. A Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologist counted more than 8,000 elk in the valley and surrounding mountains during a five-week period this year. Last year, she counted about 7,400 during the same time.

A fire that began among discarded appliances, lawnmowers and bicycles at a landfill north of Kalispell yesterday sent a column of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

A judge said today that an appeal filed by the founder of a Montana resort for the ultra-rich asking  to be freed from jail marked yet another attempt to divert attention from what he did with $13.8 million from a Mexican property sale.

Montana regulators are asking the public to comment on a proposal to grant an air-quality permit for the proposed Otter Creek coal mine near Ashland.

The state Department of Environmental Quality is taking public comment on Monday's preliminary decision until June 10.
