There’s a flood watch in effect from now until Wednesday for Flathead County in its western, northern, and eastern parts. County Emergency Planner Nikki Stephan says the valley floor isn’t expected to be as impacted as the higher elevation areas, which could potentially see up to 6 inches of total rainfall.

"There is potential that if it does get down into the freezing that there is going to be intermediate patches of black ice," said Stephan.

Impacts from the combination of rainfall and snow melt will result in small rises in streams and creeks. In some instances, creeks could become clogged with leftover ice, which could lead to localized flooding. Rock and mudslides may also occur, affecting highways. In addition, low-lying areas could see standing water.

"Hydroplaning is to be expected," she said. "Drive slow, drive safe, drive cautiously and definitely drive defensively while you’re out there."

Stephan says those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action.
