Classes resumed this week in Frenchtown where a broken water pipe last month cancelled classes a week before the scheduled winter break. Superintendent Randy Cline says the flooding caused over $500,000 worth of damage in the junior and senior high schools.
"And that would be about $300,000 for cleaning and restoration, and probably around $200,000 once we replace the floor and the bleachers.”
The Frenchtown high school gym floor and bleachers were ruined and will have to be replaced. The junior high gym floor was damaged, but can be repaired.
Cline says that unplanned extra week of winter break may have to be made up later this year.
"We’re actually going to decide that this week. In Montana it’s no longer determined by the number of days you go to school, it’s determined by the number of hours you’re in the classroom. We’re going to have to look at all of our grade levels to make sure they’re meeting the requirements with or without the (unplanned) days and then determine what we’ll do to make up those hours if we have to.”
Cline says student attendance at Frenchtown schools was normal today.
