At the watch party for Denise Juneau at the Top Hat night club in Missoula, spirits are falling as the presidential returns come in.

Terry McDonald says she’s disappointed that her candidate for Montana’s House seat is not doing better against Republican Ryan Zinke.

"It’s sad, it’s heartbreaking. I worked on the campaign and I hate to see it," says McDonald.

But Shawn Grey is more optimistic.

"Hillary’s behind in the polls as well right now, so no it’s not worrisome, we’re just building momentum," Grey says.

Denise Juneau has made a few passes through the crowd here, talking  and taking pictures with supporters, but has not yet spoken to reporters.

Eric Whitney is NPR's Mountain West/Great Plains Bureau Chief, and was the former news director for Montana Public Radio.
