Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and many volunteer events around the statewill be taking place to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

Jessica Faretti with No Kid Hungry will be hosting a community dinner in Kalispell. She says the holiday is a great chance for many people to help out since they often have the day off from work or school.

“It’s kind of just a nice day to remember that there is more that we could be doing. And especially since we have the day off. It gives you free range to volunteer and do fun projects like this.”

The dinner will be Monday at Gateway Community Center in Kalispell from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. They’ll be serving baked potatoes and chili.

Energy Corps will also be volunteering Monday by going to homes in the Billings and Red Lodge area helping to prep homes for harsh weather. Program Director Kaleena Miller says they’ll be  visiting homes of seniors, low-income residents, and disabled people to help them protect their homes for the winter. The work they do often involves sealing cold air and water leaks in the home.

“It’s lowering their energy bills, which everyone likes. And it’s also making those homeowners and those residents more comfortable in their homes.”

Miller says it’s important to sit down and talk with the residents about how to utilize energy in their homes.
