Montana Lawmakers To Consider Boxing Regulation

Wednesday at the Montana legislature, lawmakers hear a bill aimed at getting pro boxing back in Montana.

Last year, the state boxing program went into debt, causing regulators to get laid off. Without regulation, Montanans can hold boxing matches, but they aren’t sanctioned and don’t count towards national scores.

Democratic Senator Mary Caferro is carrying Senate Bill 401, and says it would make it less expensive to regulate the matches by using trained volunteers.

“To have a designee volunteer with experience in the issue, it would take them a lot less time plus it wouldn’t cost us money.”

Caferro’s nephew, Duran Caferro, is a 6’0 welterweight pro boxer, with a 2009 amateur national championship to boot. With his interests, and others' around the state in mind, she hopes to get Montana’s pro boxing scene back in the national radar.

The bill passed the Senate 42-7, and will be heard Wednesday in the House Business and Labor committee. ?
