New York reporter remembers the chaos of covering the 9/11 attack

WNYC Radio

The 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is of course most meaningful to the survivors of those who perished.

It's also a memorable day for those who witnessed the attacks and the immediate aftermath. That includes the first responders  - police and firefighters and emergency personnel - AND the reporters who covered the tragedy. Beth Fertig is one of those reporters. Fertig is an award-winning journalist with WNYC - New York's flagship public radio station. New York City is also her hometown.

"We would tell each other as we took turns reporting, hold on, I need a moment to cry."

News Director Sally Mauk spoke with Fertig earlier today about one of the toughest days of her career.

Retired in 2014 but still a presence at MTPR, Sally Mauk is a University of Kansas graduate and former wilderness ranger who has reported on everything from the Legislature to forest fires.
