A man died and his adult son was injured in Glacier National Park when the two slipped and fell while descending the east face of Mount Jackson.

Park officials say the 27-year-old son, who was able to stop his fall on a snowfield, could not find his father.

He hiked back to Gunsight Campground, where he reported the accident late Tuesday night.

Glacier Public Affairs Specialist Tim Rains:

“The campers who stayed at Gunsight Lake campground ended up assisting in the search and rescue, and were instrumental in getting the rangers out there.”

Park rangers worked with rescue helicopters to locate the man's body Wednesday, and a technical rescue team helped recover it today.

The names of the man who died and his son have not been released.
