You’re investing in a station that has no plans to shrink or fold. We know the work we do matters in Montana. We know public media offers something you can't get elsewhere. And we know that in this moment, what we do is too valuable to minimize.

So, just how far can a "freak" be pushed, anyway?

Edward O'Brien

(Update{12/12/13}:  Last week's winter storm in the Northeast kept the Weather Channel busy and this episode of "Freaks of Nature" was preempted for live coverage.  It now airs this Sunday -12/15/13-  at 8:00 p-m, MST.)

A story on athletic performance and endurance under extremely hot conditions may seem a bit incongruous given this deep freeze, but the Weather Channel is airing just such a piece this Sunday evening at 8:00.
The show, "Freaks of Nature" features the director of the Montana Center for Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism at the University of Montana's Department of Health and Human Performance.

Brent Ruby and his team were asked to help monitor ultrarunner, Scott Jurek, under punishing conditions.
Ruby explains more in this interview with Edward O'Brien.
First though, more on Ruby's unique work:

Edward O’Brien first landed at Montana Public Radio three decades ago as a news intern while attending the UM School of Journalism. He covers a wide range of stories from around the state.
