Tim O'Brien: Making Something New Out Of Something Old

Tim O’Brien is one of the most respected and versatile songwriter-performers in bluegrass and American traditional music. He’s won numerous Grammy and International Bluegrass Music Awards and has released ten solo recordings, while contributing to dozens more. In November 2013 O’Brien was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. The Wall Street Journal called him “a player who updates and clarifies classic repertoire without stripping it of its earthy essence, and who writes classic-sounding material stamped with his own perceptive personality.” O’Brien describes what he’s been doing all these years more concisely: “making something new out of something old.”

(Broadcast: "Musicians' Spotlight," 7/9/15 & 10/29/15. Listen weekly on on the radio Thursdays, 7:30 p.m., or via podcast.)

John Floridis, the host and producer of Musician's Spotlight, has been with Montana Public Radio since 1997. He has interviewed over 200 musicians during that time. He is also an independent recording and performing artist in his own right and a former registered music therapist.
