East Missoula is home to Montana’s newest state park, Milltown State Park. The new park is located near where the Clark Fork and Blackfoot rivers meet. It’s not yet fully open to the public, that’s expected later this year. Michael Kustudia with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks says the new park still needs some work.
"It’s got a row of barbed wire fence that just doesn’t need to be there." Kustudia says, "So, we’re gonna pull up the fence that doesn’t need to be there, and shore up the fence that does. If you don’t need a fence, there’s no point in having it, from a wildlife perspective and whatnot."
Fish, Wildlife and Parks is getting some help cleaning up Milltown this weekend. Saturday is National Public Lands day, and there are projects going on at eight state parks across Montana, and in Yellowstone National Park. Kustudia says the park will benefit from volunteer labor.
"We also want to highlight some of the plans we have for that property, which includes a trailhead and some trails. And we also have some work that needs to be done, so it’s a chance to get people out to help public lands and the new Milltown State Park."
The event will run from 11 a.m to 2 p.m this Saturday. Volunteers are advised to bring sturdy shoes, long pants, leather work gloves and water.
