Snow, ice and blowing snow are creating dangerous travel conditions in parts of western Montana.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for parts of western Montana this afternoon where snowfall and low temperatures are creating slippery road conditions.

What: Snow, moderate to heavy for brief periods, on top freezing roads will produce treacherous road conditions. Plan on difficult travel conditions. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected.

Where: I-90 East Missoula to Bearmouth, Butte, Georgetown Lake, Highway 12 Garrison to Elliston, Homestake Pass, Macdonald Pass, Highway 200 Bonner to Greenough, Highway 83 Seeley Lake to Condon.

When: Until 11 p.m., 12/22/17.

Additional Details: Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times.

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions are occurring. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5-1-1.

According to the National Weather Service of Missoula, another round of snowfall will occur after sunset, worsening road conditions for evening commuters, especially along the I-90 corridor into tonight. Drivers should be aware of snow, ice and limited visibility and drive cautiously.

Winter storms have recently topped off western Montana ski slopes, but officials warn the new snow can pose risks for backcountry skiers.

The Flathead Avalanche Center issued an avalanche advisory for the Flathead Range and Southern Glacier National Park area, the Whitefish Range and the Swan Range after 3 feet of dense snow fell on top of more fragile layers.

Officials advise backcountry skiers to allow the snow to settle before heading out.

Whitefish Mountain Resort officials say 28 inches of snow fell over the past week, bringing the total to 57 inches. Officials say the storms have put the slope in good shape to open by Christmas.

Missoula's Montana Snowbowl is opening new runs daily. Officials report 54 inches at the summit and 36 inches at the base.
