How Kids Can Deal With Anxiousness: Dr. Starbuck Explains
(PD)

Hi! I’m Dr. Jamison Starbuck, a naturopathic family physician with health tips for kids about anxiousness.

Anxiousness means nervousness or worry. Lots of kids are anxious sometimes. Kids can be anxious before school starts, or when they have a test or have to do a presentation in class. Some kids are anxious before they go to sleep at night. Others are anxious when they have to do something new, or go to the doctor’s office or to the dentist.

It’s pretty normal to be anxious; lots of grown-ups get anxious too. It’s just that anxiousness is not much fun. It can get you down and make it hard to do the things you love. So here are a few tips to help you feel better if worry comes your way.

Passionflower is a beautiful climbing vine native to the Americas whose corona reminded people of the crown of thorns worn by Jesus during his crucifixion. It's a sedative, milder than valerian or kava - often, you'll find it used in combination with other calming herbs like lemon balm. Passionflower calms the nervous system, reduces anxiety, and soothes insomnia and muscle spasms. Scientists think it increases levels of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. Don't use passionflower if you're pregnant or breastfeeding; it's a uterine stimulant that can over-sedate your baby.
