Cyclists admire the view atop Going to the Sun Road under a full moon Saturday night

On Saturday night, I did what every newcomer to the Flathead Valley does to prove that they’re a local: I tossed a bike in my trunk and set out for Glacier National Park to bike Going-to-the-Sun Road by the light of the full moon.

At about 9:30 pm I watched a shadow creep up the side of the continental divide on the side of Going To The Sun Road, and then hopped on my bike and joined the stream of bikers making the climb up the iconic road.

The Montana Senate blocked a bill today that would have required vehicles going 35 miles per hour to give cyclists three feet when passing and five feet when going faster. House Bill 267 failed on a 24-26 vote. A motion by Majority Leader Fred Thomas, R-Stevensville to kill the bill indefinitely passed on a 29-21 vote.

Free Cycles needs to raise an additional $135,000 to buy their shop.

A Missoula nonprofit that gives away bicycles and helps people learn to fix them is under the gun to raise enough money to buy a permanent home in Missoula.

Plowing has started on Going to the Sun Road and other roads at Glacier National Park. Going to the Sun remains closed to cars past Lake McDonald Lodge, but hikers and bikers are now able to access 17 miles of the famous highway beyond that.

In Yellowstone National Park, bicycle season begins today. 49 miles of park roads from the West Entrance at West Yellowstone to Mammoth Hot Springs are open to cyclists.

Today Montana State Parks announced plans to construct group bicycle campsites at four state parks in western Montana.

Montana ranks 46th for bicycle friendliness, that’s according to a recent study from The League of American Bicyclists.

The League looked at categories including dedicated state funding, an active state advocacy group and a "share the road" campaign.
