Billings Clinic launched a pilot project to help rural primary care providers deliver mental or behavioral health care to their patients.

“Montana is at the epicenter of a mental health crisis,” says Dr. Eric Arzubi, chair of the Psychiatry Department at Billings Clinic.

He says there aren’t enough psychiatrists, so it falls upon primary care providers in rural areas to help their patients who are struggling with mental and behavioral health issues.

Governor Steve Bullock projects Montana taxpayers could save about $25 million dollars because of the way it manages medical costs for its state employees.

Last week Billings Clinic announced that it has purchased 54 acres of land in Bozeman.

Yesterday Billings Clinic announced that it’s purchased a 54 acre piece of land in Bozeman adjacent to Interstate 90.

Billings Clinic is the biggest hospital company in Montana, operating a 304-bed hospital in Billings, and managing 11 small hospitals in Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota. It’s a non-profit organization, but last year it bought Missoula’s Community hospital in a partnership with a for-profit company based in Tennessee.

Nearly 80 people turned out for a public meeting in Billings Tuesday afternoon on the state of Montana’s proposed waiver request for its Medicaid expansion program.

As Jackie Yamanaka reports, all of the two dozen people who offered comments want the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to approve Montana’s two waivers.

For the second time in two years, a Missoula hospital is entering a joint venture with a hospital in Billings. Last year, Billings Clinic and a for-profit partner bought Missoula Community Medical center. The new joint venture announced this week isn’t a merger, but it does have Missoula’s other hospital, St Patrick, joining with St. Vincent hospital in Billings.

Attorney General Tim Fox says he needs more time to analyze how $65 million from the sale of Missoula’s Community Medical Center should be used.

Fox approved the sale itself January 12. Still pending is Community’s proposal for where money from the sale should go.

"Because the proposal was submitted rather late in the process, we felt we did not have sufficient time to review that," said John Barnes, spokesman for the attorney general.

The sale of Missoula Community Medical Center became official today. The $75 million deal took effect one minute after midnight, and hospital executives celebrated later at a press conference.

The new owners are Billings Clinic and Tennessee-based RegionalCare Hospital Partners.

Marty Rash, CEO of RegionalCare says the deal should expand medical offerings on both sides of the continental divide.

A Missoula Community Medical Center board member says the only issue left to resolve in the sale of the hospital is whether $10 million from the sale can go to the University of Montana Foundation. But Attorney General Tim Fox appears to be taking a broader view.
