"I just think that Americans, now more than ever, need to be reminded of and celebrate, and just feel good about what great culture we have produced and continue to produce through these community based traditions," says Nick Spitzer, host of American Routes.

Spitzer will be back in the state for the Montana Folk Festival in Butte, July 7-9 where he'll join MTPR's Michael Marsolek and the MTPR crew broadcasting live from the festival. In this interview, Spitzer talks about how the Montana Folk Festival fits in to the larger mosaic of folk music in America.

Snuggles Oversees The Christmas Folk Show

Stan Howe

With the help of Snuggles, a teddy bear made from his mother's old coat, Stan Howe prepares for his annual Christmas edition of The Folk Show.

"Once a year," says Howe, "around his birthday, I get him out, set him on the 78 turntable and we do my Christmas show for MTPR, remembering the long ago days when my mother turned an old black jacket she didn't like into a teddy bear that has been loved ever since."

With "Tumbleweed," his third recording in five years, singer/songwriter/guitarist Mike Murray brings a new level of maturity to his bluesy, folk-rock music. Murray, from Kalispell, Montana, credits new fatherhood for the personal lyrics and rich production qualities of this group of songs.

It’s not easy to dodge swing dancers, listen to your third favorite band of the day, admire the red ant temporary tattoos, and still hold onto your beer. But this, and so much more, is what the Red Ants Pants 2016  Music Festival requires of its attendees. Through the 90 degree heat and layers of dirt, the festival was a contagious and sultry celebration, Montana style.

Montana Public Radio's Clare Menahan spoke with singer/songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov before his show in Bozeman earlier this month.
