Candidates in the primary election can gather signatures for ballot initiatives at polling places, but they'd better be careful about it. That’s the word today from Montana Commissioner of Political Practices, Jonathan Motl.

A group campaigning to reform Montana’s medical marijuana law is getting a late start in collecting the signatures needed to qualify their initiative for the November ballot. Advocates for medical marijuana in Montana have just over two months to collect more than 24,000 signatures needed to put I-182 on the 2016 ballot.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The Montana Secretary of State's office says the sponsors of three proposed ballot initiatives may begin gathering signatures in attempt to put them before voters in the 2016 election.

One of the proposed measures would allow adults to buy, possess and use marijuana, while the second would outlaw the drug completely, including for medicinal purposes.

Montana politicians and interest groups were divided along party lines over this week's U.S. Supreme Court decision concerning the Affordable Care Act's birth control coverage mandate. In the Hobby Lobby case, the Supreme Court ruled that closely-held private corporations do not have to provide birth control as mandated by the Affordable Care Act, if the corporations have religious objections to birth control.
