He was often known as a funk artist but he was really much more. 

An original member of the Mothers of Invention, George Duke contributed to music from rock to classical during a career lasting over 40 years. 

He worked with Stanley Clarke, Jean-Luc Ponty, Al Jarreau, Anita Baker, Dianne Reeves and numerous others.  He’s also featured on “Montana,” helping Frank Zappa’s apocryphal dental floss enterprise.

7/7/14: This month on You Must Remember This, 7:30-8:30pm: host Allen Secher features singer Michael Feinstein's renditions of Gershwin songs, with introductions by Feinstein. In addition, you'll hear archival music and conversation from George and Ira Gershwin, Tony Thomas and Oscar Levant.

During a short but brilliant career Laura Nyro wrote many of the songs that have been played and recorded by pop artists during the last forty years.  Join Tom Engelmann for another edition of “Unsung Heroes, Influential but Overlooked Masters of Modern Music” as he plays the songs of Laura Nyro  performed by The Fifth Dimension, Three Dog Night, Barbara Streisand, Blood Sweat and Tears and others.  It also features Laura singing with jazz group The Manhattan Transfer and on her last live recording from 1989.

Unsung Heroes: Cowboy Jack Clement

4/28/14: This week's Monday Music Special, 7:30 - 8:30pm, is another program in Tom Engelmann's series, "Unsung Heroes."

During a career that lasted over sixty years, Cowboy Jack Clement worked as a musician, recording engineer, producer, arranger and composer. Clement was associated with nearly a thousand recordings for George Jones, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charley Pride, Waylon Jennings and numerous others.

A true “Unsung Hero,” Clement was a Nashville legend. Join Tom Engelmann as he salutes Cowboy Jack, another influential but overlooked master of modern music.

4/7/14: This week on the Monday Music Special, 7:30 - 9:00pm:  Allen Secher joins us live in the phone room for a special hour-and-a-half-long Public Radio Week edition of "You Must Remember This." Along with his umbrella, Allen's bringing some standards that discuss the weather. Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Lorenzo Fuller and other crooners predict rain, lovely weather, and spring hang-ups. Secher's forecast: steady showers of financial support from listeners.

3/3/14, 7:30-8:30pm: Host Allen Secher pays tribute to musician, songwriter and activist, Pete Seeger, who died in January 2014 at the age of 94.

02/24/2014 - During this Monday Music Special, David Sam plays compositions and covers by Peter LaFarge, Joy Harjo, Blackfire, HAPA— from Hawaii — Jesse Ed Davis, and many more American Indian and Alaska Native musicians. He also plays tracks from a Salish Culture Committee CD that includes historical information about the indigenous people of western Montana and a poem by Jennifer Finley.

 

Monday, February 3rd, 2014, 7:30-8:30pm: In honor of Valentine's Day, host Allen Secher plays a selection of standards about majestic places, big red hearts, romance, giddyness, fantasy, and powerful memories.

In honor of the new year, host Allen Secher dons the rose-colored glasses for an hour of optimistic songs, including "The Best is Yet To Come," "Feeling Groovy," "Young At Heart," "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'."

Monday, December 2nd, 2013: Each December, through music and anecdotes, Allen Secher's monthly program,"You Must Remember This" salutes Pearl Harbor Day. This December 2nd, 7:30-8:30pm, "Rosie the Riveter," "The Ration Blues," "Buy Buy Bonds," and "He's 1A in the Army and A1 in My Heart" paint a picture of the U.S.'s home front during the Second World War.

Monday, September 16th, 2013, 7:30pm: host Tom Engelmann returns with another episode of "Unsung Heroes: Influential but Overlooked Masters of Modern Music," profiling the work of the late record producer and engineer, Phil Ramone.
