Part two of a tribute to the late Mulgrew Miller continues as we move into the the present and feature his work over the last 15 years with the likes of Vincent Herring, Jim Rotondi, Lou Soloff, Jeremy Pelt and Ron Carter. We'll also hear music from his own albums, primarily leading a trio. The accomplished pianist, who had successful runs with both Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in the 1980's and and the Tony Williams quintet from 1984 until Williams own death in 1997, also inspired modern players like Geoffrey Keezer and Robert Glasper.  We lost Miller last May at 57.

What I Like About Jazz this week features part one of a two-part tribute to the late Mulgrew Miller. Miller had a long and varied career as a leader and sideman, prominently featured with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the 1980's band that also featured Donald Harrison and Terence Blanchard. He then went on to spend 9 years with another great jazz drummer, Tony Williams, playing on 6 albums with his classic quintet that featured Wallace Roney and Billy Pierce, and on Tony's final trio album in 1993. Along the way, he played sideman to a host of jazz greats, as well as many up-and-comers.
