Stillwater Mining Company

A Montana conservation group says it expects a special environmental protection agreement it signed with Stillwater Mining to remain in effect after the sale of the company, which was finalized today.

In 2000, previous company owners signed a "good neighbor agreement" with Billings-based Northern Plains Resource Council. The agreement lays out specific environmental protections beyond what government regulations require.

Stillwater Mining Co. officials say they lost $11.9 million during the three-month period that ended September 30.

Company officials said in a statement today that platinum and palladium production was higher compared to the same period last year, but the market price continued to drop and sales were down.

Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer will be hitting the airwaves of MSNBC as a political contributor, and he’ll be doing so from the comfort of his home on Georgetown Lake. Schweitzer said that was part of the reason he chose to sign with MSNBC.

“Some of the other networks require you to fly to New York or Washington D.C. and do work in the studio and I really don’t like being out of Montana that much,” Schweitzer said.

Since leaving office at the beginning of last year, Schweitzer has regularly appeared on networks like ABC, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC.
